Understanding the long-term effects of species invasions

2006

We describe here the ecological and evolutionary processes that modulate the effects of invasive species over time, and argue that such processes are so widespread and important that ecologists should adopt a long-term perspective on the effects of invasive species. These processes (including evolution, shifts in species composition, accumulation of materials and interactions with abiotic variables) can increase, decrease, or qualitatively change the impacts of an invader through time. However, most studies of the effects of invasive species have been brief and lack a temporal context; 40% of recent studies did not even state the amount of time that had passed since the invasion. Ecologists…

Coordinates and Dynamics of the Relationships between Multinational Enterprises and Economic Development – A Theoretical Approach

2013

Abstract The paper aims to configure, based on the historical analyses of the theories regarding multinational enterprises and economic development (which, most of them, are unilateral, unidimensional and focused on just one theoretical background) a conceptual framework – subsumed to the idea of a matrix with variable architecture that integrates existing models – able to allow and favour the exhaustive and dynamic analysis of the relationships between multinational enterprises and economic development within the current and future spatial and temporal context – characterized by (enormous) complexity, turbulence and volatility.

Arctica islandica (Bivalvia): A unique paleoenvironmental archive of the northern North Atlantic Ocean

2013

Abstract High-resolution environmental proxy data from the extratropical North Atlantic prior to the instrumental era are of critical importance to decipher processes and mechanisms of global change. In this regard, shells of the extremely long-lived bivalve mollusc, Arctica islandica ( Linnaeus, 1767 ), have gained particular attention during the last decade because they serve as reliable, subseasonally resolved multi-proxy archives of environmental variability in that very region. With a lifespan of more than 500 years, A. islandica is the longest-lived solitary animal. Its shell grows periodically throughout life and contains distinct annual and daily growth increments. These growth patt…

SEMANTIC AND CONTEXTUAL APPROACH FOR THE RECOMMENDATION OF LEARNING MODULES IN MOBILITY

2012

International audience; Many researchers argue that mobile learning is just an adaptation of e-learning on mobile technology, but far from a simple extension of e-learning, m-learning raises original issues in technological and pedagogical terms. M-learning is usually based on the consideration of a context rich on information and interactions. The challenge of m-learning is therefore, not simply to transfer on mobile content designed primarily for e-learning. This concept implies that we must rethink the entire process of the learning experience in mobility to maximize its efficiency.

Recommender system for combination of learning elements in mobile environment

2012

5 pages; International audience; The paper presents an ongoing research about the development of a new recommender system dedicated to m-learning. This system is an extension of content based recommender system proposals. It's made of three levels architecture: 1/ a domain model describing the knowledge of teaching, 2/ a user model defining learner's profile and learning's context, 3/ an adaptation model containing rules and metaheuristics, which aims at combining learning modules. Our system takes into account the spatio-temporal context of the learners, the evolution of learner's profile and the dynamic adaptation of modules during the learning process in a mobile environment. The result …
